Lateral Marketing, in cooperation with Harlestone Capital, Rothschild and the NSW Government, launched a successful bid to host and stage the Tennis Masters Cup in Sydney in November 2001.
The Tennis Masters Cup is the season ending Grand Finals of men's tennis. Only the top eight ranked men qualify to compete in the US$3.7 million Tennis Masters Cup, and for a chance to end the year ranked World No. 1.
The field was a who's who of the sport, with all four reigning Grand Slam Champions Agassi, Kuerten, Ivanisevic and Hewitt, plus Rafter, Kafelnikov, Ferrero and Grosjean all vying for the title.
Lleyton Hewitt claimed the World No. 1 title by defeating Pat Rafter before the largest audience for a tennis match in Australia since 1954.
With over 200 volunteers, a fleet of 50 Mercedes Benz courtesy cars, 1,300 event staff, TV Broadcasts to over 140 countries and a brilliant domestic ratings result for the Australian Nine Network, the event was hailed by Sydney radio king Alan Jones as the "biggest most significant event to come to Sydney since the Olympic Games". ATP CEO Mark Miles stated that the event had been run "with Olympic style excellence".
